Jasper

We arrived in Jasper via the Rocky Mountaineer railway. The main activities here are hiking, as we didn’t have the gear and we were scared of meeting a bear we didn’t venture too far into the national park unaccompanied. one couple on our tour did come across a bear on a walking trail so they did exactly what you shouldn’t do – the ran like hell. The bear was obviously disinterest, when they looked back it just carried on eating.

This is the hotel that we stayed at, from the outside it doesn’t look that interesting but the inside was really nice.

The Whistlers Mountain

This is accessible by the Jasper SkyTram which goes to a height of 2,263 metres (7,425 ft) above sea level with a travel time of 7.5 minutes.

Selfie taken at the top of the cable car station, it’s hard to believe it was June. The temperature was 7 degrees at the bottom and 2 degrees at the top.

From the upper tramway station, the hike to the Whistlers Summit is 1.4 kilometres, and is a 200-metre (660 ft) elevation gain to 2,463 metres (8,081 ft).

We started the walk to the top but decided that it was too far, especially since my foot kept getting stuck.

Heather decided to just stay on the edge of the snow – she was too scared of falling.

The view on the way down to the bottom of the valley.

Jasper

Railway History

Jasper is famous as a railway town and is a large intersection. When we visited there was a goods train that went through and it took about 8 minutes from the start of the train to the end of the train passing.

In recognition of the railway heritage here is an old steam locomotive

Jasper High Street

To say that Jasper as quiet is an understatement, this was the road outside the hotel in rush hour.

Eating lunch in a sandwich shop waiting for the rain to go off. This is June, we’d hate to be here in the Autumn when the weather is worse.

All over the national parks and in villages and towns there is always the reminder – don’t feed the bears.

The buildings are so quaint and look good even if the weather is cold and wet, here is the tourist information and below it the post office.

From every side of the village there is always a view of the snow capped mountains.

Jasper Toilets

These are probably the most impressive public toilets in the world. the cleanliness of the outside was matched by the cleanliness inside.
