Rocky Mountaineer

The Rocky Mountaineer train journey from Vancouver to Jasper takes two days with an overnight stop in Kamloops. This town is famous in Canada as it has facilities for all major sports apart from Aussie Rules football.

Train has arrived, we are awaiting embarkation on the Rocky Mountaineer for our journey to Jasper through the Rockies.

The map below shows the route of the Rocky Mountaineer train.

When we went there was only RedLeaf and GoldLeaf service, Our tour only included RedLeaf.

Not far into the journey we saw the first bit of wildlife, a Coyote checking out the railway line.

The unfortunate thing about this trip was that it was very wet and so may of the pictures don’t do it justice.

The train just winds along the mountainside, you can see the little bridges that are you going to cross later.

Looking across the river you can see the track in the opposite direction which has a goods train. It gives a great perspective of how close the railway sticks to the side of the mountain.

It’s amazing how long the train is, we weren’t even at the very back.

This is not snow it’s just very white rock.

There is some amazing rock formations, it feels like a lunar landscape.

Kamloops

The town of Kamloops is an intersection where the Rocky Mountaineer splits you either go north east to Jasper or east to Banff. This is used as an overnight stop where the train is restocked.

This is the hotel that we stayed in for one night in Kamloops, from the outside it just looks like “Crossroads Motel” – this is a soap opera based in the UK in the 1970’s. The inside was of each room was massive and had a kitchen, seating area and two large beds – pity it we were only therefore the one night.

New day, better weather and our last day journey begins.

We don’t mind remote but this is a steep too far. The nearest pub/shop is miles away, even in Canadian terms.

This area has such peace and tranquillity, it would be great to sit here and contemplate life knowing that the nearest person is miles and miles away.

The deep river cuttings give a dramatic feel, accentuated when the weather is good.

The first glimpse of the snow capped Rocky Mountains.

At this point We are now in the final throws of our journey as we head to Jasper.

At the end of the journey we were given a DVD and collected a few keepsakes.

This was a great railway journey and one which we will remember for ever. If your budget allows then this is well worth it.
