Slovenia

Where is Slovenia, well it’s in central Europe with Italy to the West, Austria to the North, Hungary to the East and Croatia to the south.

The country was more or less untouched by the Balkans war which started once the former Yugoslavia fell apart. It didn’t have all the ethnic conflicts found particularly in Bosnia-Herzegovina and Kosovo.

The popular places to visit, apart from Ljubljana, are Bled, Bohinj, Kranjska Gora and Piran.

Bled

Bled is Slovenia’s most popular resort, the picture on the Lake is used in the standard screen saver for televisions and computers. When you get there it’s every bit as lovely in real life. With its bluish-green lake, picture-postcard church on an islet, a medieval castle clinging to a rocky cliff and some of the highest peaks of the Julian Alps and the Karavanke as backdrops. It draws everyone from honeymooners lured by the over-the-top romantic setting to backpackers, who come for the hiking, biking, water-sports and canyoning possibilities.

Bohinj

Bohinj only attractions are Lake Bohinj and the mountains.

Lake Bohinj is the largest permanent lake in Slovenia. It is located within the Bohinj Valley of the Julian Alps which is part of the Triglav National Park.

Kranjska Gora

Kranjska Gora lies in the north western corner of Slovenia and whilst the village is only a few minutes’ drive from both the Austrian and Italian borders, you experience true Slovenian friendliness and hospitality.

It’s an attractive mountain and tourist sports centre throughout the year. In the winter it sees Alpine skiers compete and top ski jumpers break new records at the near-by Planica. Cyclists endeavour to conquer the highest Slovenian mountain pass, and hikers can stop by many points of interest.

Piran

The Slovene Riviera is less than 47km long stretching from Koper in the north to Piran in the south. It is situated on the Adriatic sea.

This is considered as one of the loveliest towns anywhere along the Adriatic coast and sits at the tip of a narrow peninsula.

Its Old Town is one of the best-preserved historical towns anywhere in the Mediterranean which can be extreme but it can be a mob scene at the height of summer.
